College & Career Mondays
7th - 12th Grade students have the opportunity to participate in field trips designed to explore careers and colleges. Some trips are focused on careers which students have inquired about such as agriculture, nursing, welding, and law enforcement. While other trips are focused on careers which students might not have considered but spark an interest such as utility work, funeral home director, train engineer, and alternative energy.
The only cost for students is lunch money as the school covers all transportation and admissions fees. Each trip is limited to six students and sign-ups are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Exact departure and arrival times will be provided a few days in advance but generally we leave the school around 7:00 am and return around 4:00 pm.

Character Strong
PK-5th Grade
The curriculum established for elementary students is called "Purposefull People" and focuses on being kind,
strong, and well. Students have a different character trait each month that is emphasized while learning how to
treat others with kindness and respect, taking responsibility for our own actions and behaviors, and seeking help
when needed. Lessons target specific skills needed at school and beyond such as time management, positive
friendships, listening, and career exploration.
6th-12th Grade
This curriculum focuses on becoming a leader in the classroom and community. Students have short lessons
once a week during 8th Hour. The goal is to learn about individual and group dynamics, what skills or traits help
someone become a productive leader, and how to utilize individual strengths in a positive fashion. Students have
the opportunity to take on challenges and try to expand the lesson from the classroom to the community.

Group & Individual Counseling
There may be moments throughout the school year where students need time and space to help resolve a conflict or stressor that is impeding their learning and growth. Students can ask to see the counselor. Teachers can make a referral. Parents/Guardians can call and speak with the counselor to make a request.
While emergencies do arise, the goal is to meet with students at a time that does not interfere with instructional learning. This may include morning or end of the day check-ins, lunchtime, and study halls. If there are several students in a similar age range with the same concern (i.e. establishing friendships), a group may be formed to help students overcome this stressor. The most common group would be a "lunch bunch" where three or four students meet with the counselor while eating lunch. Group meetings are voluntary.
School counselors are limited in scope when it comes to direct counseling. Additional resources for counseling can be obtained from the school counselor. Some of these resources accept insurance and others have a sliding fee scale. West Nodaway does have telehealth counseling capabilities so students can access their personal counselor via a designated computer during the school day.
